Brief History of APSU Canada

The death of the mother of an APSUnian led to a group of APSUnians to come up with the idea of starting the Canada Chapter, as it was called, of St. Augustine’s Past Students Union.

The group was led by Mr. Bernard Osei-Kwabena, Mr. Felix Anang and Mr. Kojo Robertson (Koobobby). An inaugural Party was held on Saturday June 20, 1992, at the then Mama T’s Black Pot Restaurant.

In 2001, another attempt was made to re-organize the group through the efforts of Mr. Osei-Kwabena, Mr. Felix Anang, Mr. William Paintsil, and Mr. Anthony Deheer (Pouncho).

The year 2005, saw the group evolve with the help of Mr. Osei-Kwabena, Mr. Felix Anang, Mr. William Paintsil, Richard Netty (Chicago), David Kodua, (Raka), John Bentum-Williams (Raspa), the late Nicky Atayi, Kwadwo Boateng, Kweku Koduah, Alex Kyei (Alan Tang), Daniel Ankrah (Agoligo) and Tony Aidoo (Tom Brown). We have been active with monthly meetings in members’ homes and on occasions in restaurants to discuss issues pertaining to the group and the school. APSU Canada has a current active membership of 20, even though it was as high as 33 at one point.

In September, 2009, we purchased and delivered a scooter to the late Monsignor Mensah to facilitate his mobility after his stroke. In 2008, another presentation of a set of jerseys and soccer balls was made to the school. In 2014, 2 lawnmowers were presented to the school at the request of the Headmaster who met with some members of APSU Canada when he attended a meeting of headmasters in Toronto in August, 2011.

Our annual picnics and Christmas parties have been community events for the Ghanaian community in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The school anthem, Mbo Augustine, has become popular and everyone who attends our functions looks forward to it being sung and even join in.

We have provided assistance to members at weddings, outdoorings, christenings, and comfort to those who lost family members with their presence and monetary assistance.

APSU Canada through the efforts of the past 2 executives is now a Canadian Registered Charity.

We, APSU Canada, pledge to continue to provide assistance to St. Augustine’s College, the Global APSU community and our local community here in the GTA.
